The history of anti-heroes goes waaay back. They existed in Greek


literature, and have been fairly common throughout historical literature.

But if we are just talking about the bad guy you root for in modern television, and excluding soap opera characters, I think the groundbreaking character was probably Al Bundy. He somehow took a fairly unredeemable personality and made it likable, and did it at a level that, say, Archie Bunker or George Jefferson never did.

Sopranos certainly took the badness of the bad guy you root for to another level. Then they were topped by the likes of Dexter and Breaking Bad.

[edit] Now that I've called out Al Bundy, it dawned on me that Homer and Bart Simpson predated Al Bundy as pop culture phenomenon anti-heroes.
