That's it. The biggest deal isn't necessarily the best deal
There is an entire list of factors that come into play. It's easy to assume 30 million dollars a year would be better then 20 million dollars a year. But the shoes and gear Virginia Tech athletes wear effects recruiting, coaches, scheduling, personal and corporate relationships and a more nebulous overall opinion of a program.
I think we all agree that Virginia Tech deserves a better deal then they negotiated with Nike the last time around. But bigger doesn't necessarily mean better.
Right now, I'd have no problem if Virginia Tech chose to make a stand and announced they were dropping Nike. But in the eyes of young athletes, a deal with Nkie still has value. I'm just a consumer and a fan. I hope when Tech redoes it's deal, the next deal serves to advance Virginia Tech athletics as much as possible.
