It isn't as automatic as you may think

It is one of the reasons the NCAA placed the hash marks 40' apart even though the uprights are only 18.5' apart instead of the same distance as the NFL (hash marks are the same width as the uprights), so kickers have the benefit of wider angles. If college kickers were always automatic, then NC State wouldn't have missed an easy FG against Clemson in 2016.
