Plenty Again

Tomatoes are really spiking right now. The recent rains really damaged the fruit. When you get a period of protracted rain after the fruit have made their initial growth burst, they will split with the influx of excessive moisture.

Different varieties are more impacted by splitting. The Goliaths in the foreground tend to split along their crowns and the splits rarely completely disfigure the fruit. The Brandywines (pinkish on the left) rarely split at all. The Sun Sugars (yellow cherry) tend to have shallow splits while the Sweet Millions (round red cherry) split easily and deeply, affecting the harvest. If a tomato splits deeply enough, fruit flies and ants invade and quickly render the fruit unusable.

The peppers are also beginning to pop. In the cherry tomato picture, I framed it with a Giant Marconi in the foreground, a Cal Wonder on the upper left and a poblano in the lower left.
