It helps them maximize their value as players. And gets them degrees.
One of the things in these discussions that people often do is toss off the value of the degree as if it's nothing. But it's not an exaggeration to say that many, many kids (or their parents really) are paying easily $150 K and more just in tuition. These players get degrees for free if they choose to take advantage. While it may be slowly changing, there is absolutely no question that getting a degree is a ticket to upward mobility. It is necessary for moving into and beyond the middle class. When fans talk about how college football is the only way out for some poor kids, they discount how for those who don't go pro, that degree offers them a ticket out as well, albeit a very different one.
