I would point to the Kevin Newsome saga
Virginia Tech's top QB target in 2009. Newsome was the #6 player in the state, and second best QB behind #4 Tajh Boyd. LT was of course the #1 player, but every indication through recruiting was that he'd be a collegiate tight end. Beamer put all of his marbles in landing Newsome as his QB. But Newsome couldn't turn down whatever the Nittany Lions were selling.
But Newsome never had a chance on the field, once . Newsome was slated to be the starter his sophomore season, until Paterno landed a 4-star QB he liked even more than Newsome. Joe Paterno accused Newsome of not getting it done in the classroom. That is life in big-time college football, I suppose. But you wonder if these kids would fare better if they stayed in Virginia to play college ball.
