Test ride like crazy
I good bike shop will let you try a lot of bikes and they may even have some that you can borrow or rent for a whole day. I bike a lot, but when I buy a bike, it's probably my bike for the next ten years ... so take your time and make the right decision. Take weeks and weeks to figure out what you like most. When I settled on my new bike, it felt like it was designed for me: I feel comfortable on it for hours.
Also, read a lot about bikes. I learned from reading that many bike manufacturers had developed a more upright, less aggressive version of a road bike because of the aging population. Looks and acts pretty much like a regular road bike, but the rider sits more upright and less stretched out. That's what I ended up buying - a Jamis Endura. It's about half way between a traditional road/racing bike and an even more upright road/hybrid bike (which also could be a very good option for you).
Read up on hybrids and the relaxed road bikes before you gon into a shop. You'll want to try all of them because one might feel just perfect.
