The product is now tailored to the TV viewer and people can't understand...
why the spectator won't choose the method the product is being tailored for. Why would you pay a premium to attend an event that doesn't cater to you?
1. Inconvenient game times (TV)
2. Long breaks in action for media timeouts (TV)
3. Instant replay (TV)
Now add in all the inconveniences that the TV viewer doesn't have to experience:
1. Out of pocket costs - $500-$1000 per weekend
2. Travel
3. Parking
4. No guarantee of great view of the action (depends on tickets)
5. Time spent (i.e. weekend gone)
6. Weather
So what do you get by physically going to the game?
1. 5 minutes of buildup and Enter Sandman
2. Atmosphere during the game
3. A chance to reunite with distant friends
Now, I always say everyone has his/her thing they will spend money on that people on the outside can't understand why. And how people spend their (increasingly limited) discretionary dollar is that person's choice. But if you're not going to tailor the product to the spectator (and they won't), the reasons to spend that discretionary dollar to attend a game becomes less appealing.
