VT Not AS Bad As National Average......Happening at Most Schools
Even the top tier programs are seeing a drop in attendance.....and across all the D1. Last year, the drop was 5.3% nationally, and it has been a five year negative trend now.
There a many reasons folks don't want to spend 4 hours sitting out in the blazing sun (East Side in September) or rain downpours (last year Duke)...but some of us older Gobblers still do happily.
Some thoughts:
1. Game getting too long time-wise, from 3:25hrs ten years ago, to almost 4 hours in 2017
2. Too much TV coverage...which also makes the games longer. almost every game now broadcast....makes it easy to stay home and watch in comfort.
3. It aint getting any cheaper...costs have gone up a lot. Tickets, hotel rooms, hassle factor
4. Millenials.....just not into football as much, or any organized sports in general. Cell phone generation needs constant stimulation.
5. Tech needs to improve the product. We are a bit spoiled, but we need a team to win a minimum of 8 games each year to keep the interest level.
