CC's football attendance article

Things have changed over the years for all of us. We used to support filling up Lane Stadium for 90 or so straight games. Now we all have stories why we can't or won't anymore. Personally, I used to give $5k every year and bought season tix on the 45 yard line on the east side every year. My 3rd divorce put an end to that. Plus I've had 3 major back surgeries and several strokes over the years. I'd love to go to games but I can't walk to and into the stadium any more...it would be nice to have a drop off area near the gate, but I understand why that isn't feasible.

I think part of the problem is a new breed of fan that Virginia Tech is not properly addressing their wants and needs. Us baby boomers are turning the world over to the younger generation, especially to mellenials who don't think or act like we do. As Jesus pointed out, VT is trying to put new wine into old wine skins. Just an analogy. Guess what? It ain't working. Two years in, and the Drive to 25 has got us only about 1,000 or so new donors. What's wrong, Whit?

I love Enter Sandman and the crowd roaring LET'S GO!...HOKIES!, or upping the decibals after a long pass or running TD, or a fumble recovery, or pick 6, or a blocked kick. That's why we need sellouts again. But it ain't going to happen unless the product is changed to meet the new generation's appetite. Something that is better than home entertainment systems or hot dog lines or ticket costs or accomodation problems or recruiting wars, etc., ad nauseum.

I've loved VPI and VT for nigh on 70 years, but it ain't mama's little baby boy anymore with orange and maroon mums or steamers. Something's gotta give or the times will change before our misty eyes. Here's looking atcha', kid.
