Rutgers-PSU on BTN was the most watched college football game of the day

in NYC and Philly a few years back. Including games on ESPN, etc.

Here's something from way back before they joined the Big Ten.

There is plenty that doesn't make sense about conference realignment. The lack of regard for traditional rivalries and common sense geography among them. Since television money is largely driving the moves, how much do TV ratings matter?

When Syracuse ditched the Big East for the Atlantic Coast Conference, university president Nancy Cantor, athletics director Daryl Gross and ACC commissioner John Swofford referenced the New York market that Syracuse will bring to the league. Perhaps in basketball.

The Rutgers-Louisville game on ESPN2 had more than twice the viewers in New York City than the Syracuse-West Virginia game on ESPN. Both started at 8 on Friday night. Rutgers-Louisville drew a 1.45 share in New York City compared to 0.7 for West Virginia-Syracuse, according to the Nielsen ratings.

Rutgers has been involved in all five of the all-time top-rated football games in New York City on ESPN2 and been part of four of the five all-time highest-rated football games in the New York City area on ESPN.

Rutgers and West Virginia, both coming off losses, meet Saturday (3:30 pm ET, ABC). WVU is hoping to jump to the Big 12, while Rutgers is 2-0 vs. Big East defectors, having beaten Syracuse and Pittsburgh earlier this month.

Rutgers and its TV ratings may be shut out of conference realignment, unless Notre Dame finally says yes to the Big Ten and the league looks to add the Scarlet Knights as its 14th team, according to the Chicago Tribune.

A New York Times study of the 210 television markets found New York has about 3 million college football fans, and 20.9% of those chose Rutgers as their favorite team. That's almost equal to those naming Notre Dame (9.2%), Penn State (6.4) and Connecticut (5.2) combined.

They aren't bringing huge numbers, but they do top the market. Unfortunately for them, it's still a fairly small number
