Factors recognized. Nearly every decision over 10 years was a disaster.
And some of us, like that Chuck guy, were here on this very board pointing that out. It all began with their caving to Shalalah and allowing her to dictate BC and Cuse. Where else was Miami going to go? Governors and big money folks in Virginia saved Greensboro's bacon there.
Next was the later addition of dead weight like BC. Why was that necessary? Recall the model of adding the Boston market for a channel being important. Well, a network wouldn't happen for 15-20 years. Carried that dead weight for a very very long time.
Then, they caved and placed the ACCCG in the broad daylight in Florida. Disaster and the ACC became a laughingstock. The fact that dead weight BC went some made it worse. Actually remember them trying to play the ACC Baseball Tourney in Fenway. Ha!!!! Hillarious. That ridiculous idea was shot down quickly after they figured out nobody in Boston cares about BC, much less their baseball team.
Second biggest mistake occurred in the 2010 range when a horrible contract was agreed to. The Pac12 came out with a Tier 1 and 2 contract that paid far more. Additionally, they were allowed to keep their tier 3 stuff for a network. As bad as that network has been, it's added about $10 million to the Pac12 schools that has only served to line Raycom's pockets thus far in the ACC. Also, that Pac12 Network can always be sold and they will certainly receive decent dough from it when that time comes.
Followed that up, by being forced to add teams to renegotiate the contract. Problem was, they added teams that did little to move the football dial, so the renegotiated contract still left the ACC behind all other P5 leagues in TV payouts. Cuse and Pitt are receiving as big a cuts as VT and FSU right now. Great. Anyhow, recall the ACC sending the mascots to NYC to awkwardly prance around town and nobody ever actually figured out whey they were there. As if Syracuse carried the NYC market.
THEN, the scheduling of football has been disasterous for VT. The teams that we play annually struggle to sell tickets in their own stadiums, much less Lane Stadium. We average about one ACC game a year that you can't get a ticket outside for $20. Think about what THAT does for fundraising. Think about it. We get Clemson or FSU once every 12 years.
Playoffs and bowl structure was realigned. Every other league got $40 million from their anchor bowl, including the 10 team Big12 and 12 team Pac12. The ACC got $27 million for 14 teams. Indefensible.
They allowed Maryland to escape out the back door. Horrible. Swoff and Co created the problem that practically forced maryland to take ALL THAT EXTRA MONEY the B1G was offering. No reason why the payouts should have been that much different.
They added Louisville instead of WVU. Another mistake. Louisville was a smoke and mirrors show with all their money that was being thrown around. Meanwhile, a flagship school with 2 or 3 ACC rivals was closer by just waiting to be taken. And don't give me the academics thing. Good football and bball with passionate fans.
ACC FINALLY gets serious about a network, but it takes years to figure out this Raycom mess to actually get the rights to that content. And we still don't know that it's going to get us anywhere near where we need to be.
Finally, the ACC plays hardball with the other P5s and makes a proposal to decide it's champion on its own. Problem is, Delaney sniffs it out and leads an unprecedented move to reject the ACC's portion of the proposal while allowing the Big12s. He flat out said it was because Swofford wasn't being transparent. What?
There's more. So, how many of these are you willing to explain away? Should we keep riding the Stech hype train around here? This is a football business board and all these errors were pointed out here before, during, and after they occurred on this very board.
VT is in trouble folks. Football insiders I trust are saying as much. It's going to be super tough for us to recruit in this environment. 15 man bball programs at elite institutions like UNC and Duke can do so. Historic juggarnauts like Clemson and FSU can compete too. VT Football is in a hole here.
Discussion should be 2 things: How do we prevent more errors? And is there anything we can do to move forward. Or, are we just crossing our fingers for this ACC Network?
