I'd agree on #1 but on #2 you gotta live it through his eyes to comment.

Having been in a similar situation in the past year I get it. Just a guess but I'd bet he thought he stood a good chance of dying and wanted to see his wife one last time before going into surgery. It might not be the "best decision" in terms of his life expectancy but to him it probably was the best decision getting to say in person what he wanted to say.
