Reasons for my thought that they should not be given a wrestle-off chance

Even though I normally agree that we should have the best team available for representing the USA, in this case the conditions of the competition and the criteria for making either (or both) teams was established and published well before the trials. Once you start the process, any process for that matter, you really shouldn't change the "rules" after the fact because you now have a "better idea" on how it should have happened.

It's best to implement changes you want to make the next time you host trials.

To be clear, if the rules had been established ahead of time that losers of the USA team trials could challenge the U23 trial winners (as long as they qualified otherwise), then that would be totally different and I personally would support that approach. To help that happen, the USA team trials should be held first, and then hold the U23 trials a week or two later to give the competitors a chance to recover and compete at their best.

My opinion is just that, and is somewhat biased by my desire to see DMF compete at the worlds. I definitely see the other side though also.
