It isn't just effort. Funding is huge.

Look at the support staff for Ohio State and then look at the support staff for the Marching Virginians. Ohio State has a director, several associate and assistant directors, lots of graduate assistants, and several other paid positions that help offload some of the work from the director. The MVs have a director and an assistant and sometimes have had some graduate assistants that are volunteer positions.

There's also a huge difference in terms of the age of the bands. The MVs have been around for 40 years while Ohio State has been around since the 1800s. The biggest difference there is the age of alumni and their ability to donate to the band. Our alumni are just now reaching retirement age. OSU has Steinbrenner and Jack Niklaus raising money for them!

Finally, yes, they do put in more effort than the MVs, and they have a better product to show for that effort. Just going on what they advertise on their website it looks like they put in 2-3x the practice time during the week (in-season). They also hold 22 2.5 hour summer sessions. Personally, I would not have been in the MVs if the practice requirements were that intense. I loved my time in the band, most of my strongest friendships today were formed in the band, but tripling the practice time would have been a non-starter for me.
