The Big East absorbed most of the original members.

And then the ones that play football evolved into the American Conference. The ones that didn't remain in the Big East.

C-USA absorbed much of what was the Metro Conference.

The ACC has hand picked what it has wanted out of that group. We have Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech from the Metro Conference, and now Louisville after their time in C-USA, the Big East, and the American.
