I don't think that example fits very well.

Garland was a prolific scorer in high school, certainly. However, his high school scoring did not translate to the college game, especially right away. I'm not sure what would've happened in his Virginia Tech career had he stuck around. However, he was a contributor at LaSalle, but never the type of star that warranted letting him have the ball and go to work. He also never developed a jump shot, which really held his game back. I say that as someone who really liked Ty Garland and was sorry to see him go when he transferred.

There are certainly other examples from Greenberg's tenure where he did allow his lead guards the freedom to operate, maybe not in exactly Steph Curry at Davidson style, but certainly having a great deal of opportunity (Dowdell, Delaney, Green).

In terms of Curry's development if he had chosen VT instead of Davidson, he would likely not have had nearly the opportunity as a freshman that he had at Davidson, mainly because we had Gordon and Dowdell as returning senior starters for that season. The next year, given how his game developed, he likely would've had lots of opportunities. It's difficult to say whether his game would've developed in the same way or not if he was playing more of a reserve role as a freshman -- given how good he turned out to be for Davidson that year, he may have forced his way into significant minutes as a freshman anyway, perhaps going smaller with lineups to get him on the court with Dowdell and Gordon.

I'm not a fan of Steph Curry as a person, but he is an incredible basketball player who would've helped Virginia Tech basketball quite a bit if he had chosen to play for us. In the end, he made a decision that worked out great for himself, so it's hard to argue with it.
