A possible reason the Big Ten could want to expand East

is because the 2 Indiana schools and 2 Illinois schools have a rivalry with each other. Right now the Big Ten has 1 Indiana school in both divisions (only protected cross-division game). If the Big Ten expanded East, then Indiana could move to the West Division. Likewise, if the Big Ten expanded West, then Purdue could move to the East Division. The only downside to having the 2 Indiana schools in the East is that it would disrupt the IN-IL rivalries.
