FWIW the Caps, Wizards, and Mystics home games generally
start around 7:30pm. You might get a 7pm or 8pm start time if the game is a national broadcast instead of a regional broadcast. I believe the Nats vary a little more with its evening start time. If the Redskins are playing on Sunday or Monday night, then you are looking at a 7:30pm kickoff. In terms of concerts and other theatrical productions, I believe most start between 7-8pm. Regardless whether the game goes in OT or not, the time for the "last train" is really the determining factor.
Since the Metro shuts down at midnight, the last train leaving a metro stop could be as early as 10:45-11:15pm depending on the departure station and destination station are located. I have never ridden the metro from the beginning/end stations of a single line or multiple lines, but I guess the last train could even drop to 10:30 or 10:35pm. So for fans who decide to take the metro to watch whatever, there is a possibility they might have to leave their event early to avoid missing the last train. If they miss it, then they either have to use Uber or take a taxi. At 1 time DC was broken up into fare zones that varied, but I think that was eliminated in 2012.
