I would try to hire a successful coach from a northeast school.

Tech's best chance for success is to combine getting the best talent from Virginia with good out of state talent. VT is in a tough situation geographically to get the best from the southeast, or west coast. Weather is more similar to that in the northeast. Face it, when most of the season is played in Feb-Apr, 90% of the players nationwide would prefer to play in warm weather. The top players in the south are going to stay in the south. Same with the west coast. To a great player in PA, Virginia is south! A coach from the northeast will have the connections with the northeast club programs. There are plenty of good players in the northeast, and focusing on that area would put Tech recruiting in a position of strength, not weakness.

By successful, any coach from a lower level school that is successful knows how to recognize talent that they can get. A solid club coach with top level playing experience would be fine, too. White and Walton were both ex-players. Those coaches teach solid fundamentals, both hitting and defense.
