Neither the ACC nor Big Ten replicate the Big East's success in NYC

So why bother trying? The Big East had St. John's locally plus a bunch of schools fairly close by: Cuse, UConn, Villanova, Seton Hall and Rutgers, with Georgetown and Providence only a little farther away. Pitt was to the Big East tournament what Georgia Tech is the the typical ACC tournament. Part of the family, but not really a big draw unless the team was really, really good.

There are no true NYC schools in the ACC. Other than Syracuse, the only ACC schools that will draw casual interest in NYC are Notre Dame and the national powers - Duke and UNC - and maybe whatever random program in any given year (a) has a tremendous team (b) led by a nationally hyped player.

If the ACC ever wants to plant a flag somewhere other than Greensboro/Charlotte, it should plant it in Washington, DC. The SEC has already claimed Atlanta, even if they move their hoops tournament to Nashville or Birmingham. Florida and anyplace in the northeast are too distant from the bulk of ACC fans. DC is a tourist destination, has a first class basketball facility and playing there would help reduce any influence Maryland and Penn State have in that region for the Big Ten.
