I was drinking more and more because of my students, my job, my insecurities, my growing addiction. I quit the day I gave my keys to a friend after I fell in a cow pasture after stumbling out of a port-o-john while on crutches.

I retired the following year, after enjoying the realities of sobriety and teaching...
