Comments from a Penn Stater

I read the posts below regarding PSU and the Devyn Ford recruitment. First of all, I had never seen the ESPN video of the PSU football facility nor had I seen any video tour of the facility - funny I had to come to the VT board to see it! Yes, I agree it is impressive. But you know what? Just this past week "our" CJF was doing a multi-city alumni tour and he mentioned how PSU's facilities were "way behind" the facilities of the other Big10 member schools. It looks like the "arms race" in college sports isn't slowing down. Frankly, I think it is overdone, but I understand that everyone has to keep up with the Jones'. The day of reckoning is coming - the money isn't limitless. These mega TV contracts are going to start falling apart sooner or later as the networks' revenue starts falling due to several issues, a big one being "cord cutting". Most of the universities spend every dime that comes in - it will be interesting to see what happens when they have to start reducing spending/expenses.

I wasn't aware that Ford already committed and signed his LOI with PSU, but it appears that is the situation based upon everyone's opinions posted below (tic). Frankly, I have no clue if he is going to choose PSU or VT. Regardless, I don't get too wound up about where 17 year old kids decide to play football. I take the old fashioned approach - I pull for the guys that the coaches ultimately put on the field on Saturdays and I don't worry about the ones that "got away".

Why would he choose PSU over VT? Why do I like red wine and my wife likes white wine? Neither choice is absolutely "right" or "wrong". There is a whole list of reasons why kids choose one college over another and it could be anything from coaches, teammates, facilities, NFL potential, academic degree programs, dorm rooms, proximity to home, weather, uniform colors, girlfriends, cars & cash (ha ha), etc.

Some of you mentioned the crowded backfield at PSU. We do have a 5 star running back (Miles Sanders) who will be a junior this fall - he sat behind Saquon for the past two years (understandably). If he has a big year, it is not inconceivable that he can declare for the NFL next spring. We also have Ricky Slade (another 5 star) coming in this fall who will be one year ahead of DF. Other than those two, we have a couple of other backs that may or may not prove to be more than adequate. So, it's not as though DF would be buried on the depth chart and never heard from again - he will likely be a significant contributor by his sophomore year.

Which brings up the question of why do schools such as Alabama and Ohio State continue to load up with a three/four deep 4 and 5 star players at each position? Why does Clemson have 3 or 4 (5) star qb's on their roster? Simply put, most of the kids in that talent bracket think they are good enough to play anywhere, regardless of the talent in front of them. They also want to play with kids that are just as talented as they and they want to have a realistic chance at competing for conference and CFP championships. I do believe there is some truth that DF wants to team up with Ricky Slade as a 1-2 punch at running back - often in the backfield at the same time.

Finally, a comment regarding "our" CJF. Franklin is one of the most dynamic people I have ever seen. His energy and yes, his "salesmanship" never stops. He "sells" much more than football to the recruits and he recruits more than just the player - he recruits the parents just as hard. He is constantly selling himself and the PSU program to the team, the letterman, the alumni, the community, etc. Recently, he took all the members of the Blue Band that had a 4.0 GPA (surprisingly there were quite a few) to dinner. What football coach does that? You don't think those band kids were thrilled to spend an evening with him "one on one"? Just another example of him building relationships throughout the PSU community.

He is tireless and extremely well organized. I do believe he will be at PSU for a long time - he is a college coach and I don't believe he has any interest in the NFL. I truly believe our recruiting will be at a level better than it was under Paterno.

So, if DF commits to PSU - good for us. If he commits to VT - good for you. Regardless, each program will move forward with their rosters and I fully expect a very competitive game in Blacksburg in 2020.
