I don't know that expecting to play for ACC championships regularly is a
stretch. Every team in our division has some limitations or questions. Miami has a great location and history but doesn't have nearly the money that say Clemson does. UNC is a basketball school that has trouble filling seats even when the team is good. Same for Duke. GT runs an oddball offense that gives them a solid floor but a lower ceiling. Pitt has a better history overall than VT but that's about it. UVA is still trying to figure things out under Bronco and hasn't been relevant in a decade. There's no reason VT shouldn't be expecting to win our division every year. There's no Clemson, FSU, or even Louisville on our side. I think our goal should be to get to the ACC Championship most years, with a win here or there, and then anything after that is gravy. It would take an extreme confluence of talent, luck, and circumstance for us to make it to the National Championship right now... but that's ok. That's the case for just about every program out there outside of the top tier schools (Alabama, Clemson, etc.).
