I agree about the person dementia happens to.
However, it's hell for the family. The person who is suffering dementia slowly dies in front of the family. They are still breathing but the person they were is dead. We've gone through that with my mother, who is 95 years old.
I go see her once a week and take a Hardee's meal of chicken tenders, fries, chocolate chip cookie and drink. Mom does still recognize my siblings and I, and our spouses. However she doesn't remember her grand kids nor the great grand kids.
Sadly, 30 minutes after I leave, she will not remember I was even there.
