Agreed, had Houston gone undefeated last year and gotten left out
There would have been some reasons to gripe (but they ended up losing). But they beat a very solid Oklahoma team (or am I thinking two years ago?) and were clearly the better team in doing it too. IIRC, they had another good win too (Louisville?).
But yes, if you're a G5 team who has reason to believe you're going to have a special season, you better schedule accordingly OOC. Because beating up on the likes of Tulsa, East Carolina, and UCONN doesn't impress anyone. When your best wins are a close win over USF and Memphis (good wins... but not signature wins by any stretch), you haven't earned a berth as one of the top 4 teams. Now if the playoffs were eight teams, I would be more willing to give the G5 teams a chance. In fact, I would be all for giving the best G5 an auto-bid as an 8 seed at the minimum. If the G5 can beat the #1 team followed by two more top 7 teams, then they clearly are worthy of a national championship.
