Where would VT be if not for Big East Football?
Apologies if this is a re-hash of some prior topic, but I've not seen it...
Just thinking back. In my opinion, the Big East is what vaulted VT to big boy status. And it was a border-line thing. Clearly VT and Temple were the last two picked to be in the conference. And I believe VT was actually the last one (Temple may have been voted out later, but that was many years later).
VT might have made it to P5 many years later, but might also be in ECU's shoes now. Would the ACC have caved to invite VT if VT hadn't proven their worth by their performance in the Big East? Maybe, but I'm skeptical. Would the SEC have been interested in any program that wasn't from another power conference (exempting ND, of course)? I really doubt it. The Big12? Okay, reasonable chance that could have happened. But thank God it didn't come to that. And even that is speculation, as VT might not have been an attractive product sans the Big East history.
I'm normally a glass-is-half-empty kind of guy. But in this case, I see it as half full.
I want top 10 programs and national championships. But when I think of where we could easily have ended up, I'm happy where VT is.
