Outlaw’s 3PT Shooting

First off... I think he can fill a need on this team. I’d be happy if he stayed and I would wish him well if he left. It seems like he has been through a lot and I hope he has a great year of basketball, wherever he is.

I think there is a common misperception amongst VTBB fans that he is an undeniably excellent in-game 3PT shooter. I’m not stating that he isn’t... but more accurately that we just don’t know based on small sample size.

Here are a few stats on his 3PT shooting...

63 career game total... 74/169 for 43.8%

30 games at UNCG... 17/52 for 32.7%
First 25 games at VT... 19/56 for 33.9%
Total for first 55 games (UNCG, VT)... 36/108 for 33.3%

Final 8 games of 2016-17... 38/61 for 62.2%

He shot at a thoroughly unsustainable 62.2% in that remarkable 8 game stretch, making more 3 point shots in those 8 games than in his first 55 games. All of the in-game evidence that Outlaw is a great shooter is contained in an incredible 8 game run over a year ago. Outside of that stretch, his 3PT production was very pedestrian.

Given that, I have to think that the jury is really still out on what sort of 3PT production is realistic to expect in his final year. It would certainly be fun to watch another barrage like that 8 game stretch, but that doesn’t seem very realistic to me.
