For the curious... counter to the offer was unsuccessful.

I do have flexibility on continuing to work remotely until I get the family moved, so that was a plus. No stress of a hard deadline to move.

Never hurts to ask. If someone is going to "punish" you for asking, then it's probably not a work/management culture you want/need to be anyway.
