The Big East was always a basketball conference

There is a really good ESPN 30 for 30 documentary called "Requiem for the Big East" that gives a very detailed history of that league. They were at their pinnacle in 1986 when Georgetown, St. John's, and Villanova all made the Final 4. Schools back at that time across the northeast and even the south were largely independent in football. But then Penn State joined the Big Ten and Florida State joined the ACC.

Tranghese new he had to add football schools to keep Syracuse, Boston College, and Pittsburgh from leaving. Hence the birth of the Big East football conference. The irony today is that Syracuse, Boston College, and Pittsburgh are in the ACC today. Had the Big East let them go to the ACC back then, it would be interesting to speculate what would have happened. I don't know if the ACC would have wanted them then. It was not until the ACC wanted Miami that the transition of Big East to ACC became possible. I just wish we hadn't let WVU get away, but Maryland not making their intentions known enabled that. Hopefully that can be corrected in the future.
