One way of looking at it. Here's another.

There are only 5 women AD's in the entire P5 and 2 are in the ACC. Someone might say we're ahead of the curve on this.

When you consider that Debbie Yow left Maryland a total mess (and in a very public way) and Carla Williams had never been an AD before, it makes sense that their pay is on the low end. If college presidents really could get equally qualified AD candidates for substantially less money, most of them undoubtedly would. I can't see them surviving very long by paying a lot more for the same or less results just because the candidates are men.

Sometimes, change is slow in coming. We have to remember that Title IX didn't really start having a widespread effect until the 90's at the earliest. Before that, there were AD's like Bill Dooley, in the 80's, who wouldn't let VT's women's volleyball team use the athletic department bus to get to their away games. I imagine that in the coming years, more and more qualified women will become available for AD jobs and we'll see these numbers change.

In any case, while it is possible there's discrimination going on, wages are influenced by too many factors to simply draw definitive conclusions based on raw salary comparisons.
