Tranghese didn't like ECU for some reason.

He didn't like Memphis either. Both ECU and Memphis tried very hard to get into his league even after VT left. He did take them. They didn't get that chance until Syracuse and Pitt left. And that is when Temple was invited back too. But that was not done by Tranghese.

I'm not sure that the northeastern Catholic schools in the Big East were all that interested in having southern public schools. And Villanova specifically was blackballing Temple basketball back then. If Temple had been a full member like they allowed Rutgers to be, they may not have been asked to leave.
