I still believe that politics are over played WRT VT and the ACC.


Dr Casteen of UVA, and against the wishes of many in the athletic department and apparently the BoV, was 100% against ACC expansion if VT were not included. It did not take then Gov Warner and the state government to pressure Dr Casteen to be 100% behind VT.

Before he became head of UVA, Dr Casteen was in state government as head of SCHEV, State Consuel of Higher Education for Virginia. He already knew how important it was for VT and the southwestern part of the state to be in a major athletic conference. As long as the BE was viable, he was fine with that. But when Swofford proposed crippling the BE by taking Miami, BC, and Syracuse, he knew the bad effects it would have on VT and southwest Virginia.

So he was always a no vote on expansion that did not include VT. And as long as both Duke and UNC continued to vote against any expansion, his vote was a veto. When Syracuse was dropped and VT added, expansion was assured.

All the governor did was provide political cover and protection for Dr Casteen. He just gently reminded the UVA BoV they served at his pleasure. Plus the fact Mr Bill Goodwin, who was uber successful in the business world, held a VT undergraduate degree, and a MBA from the Colgate Darden School of Business, and was currently serving on the UVA BoV.
