The Northeast doesn't watch much college football

Outside of Notre Dame and Penn State, they're watching the SEC, and not in large numbers. The Northeast is paying attention to the New England Patriots, Philadelphia Eagles, Pittsburgh Steelers, and New York Giants for football. The Eagles v Patriots Super Bowl is the pinnacle.

The Northeast follows college basketball. Villanova winning the championship gets a lot of attention. Syracuse gets 30,000+ for basketball games in the Carrier Dome. They don't get much more than that for football. What can improve the football attendance is interest is rivalry games. That's why I advocate for West Virginia. Games with them will fill the Carrier Dome, will fill Heinz Field, and will also fill all the football stadiums in Virginia and North Carolina in the ACC. The VA and NC is largely do to all the West Virginia transplants.

People wonder why Maryland and Rutgers don't fill their football stadiums in the B1G. They do with Penn State because of proximity, but the answer lies with rivalries. They don't have any in the B1G. Once the Midwestern fans visit once, they've been there done that. No need to do it again. I have friends that are Illinois Illini alumns. They think the addition of Maryland & Rutgers has ruined B1G football. They have no interest in those games, and because they are there they play Michigan & Ohio State less. They hate that.

ESPN wants the northeastern content for games from January to August. They don't need northeast content for football season. They have the ACC and SEC. And they have part of Notre Dame by way of the ACC. They have part of the Big XII with West Virginia.

What ESPN needs to do in the Northeast is continue to own the best college basketball content and to promote college lacrosse. Those are of interest to the Northeast. Ivy League and Patriot League bring Lacrosse. ACC brings lacrosse. Notre Dame v UNC is on ESPNU today.
