Verbals mean quite a bit in the softball recruiting world

I see this a lot that until the LOI is signed none of this means anything. Yes, technically this is correct, but it is rare that a college backs out of a verbal commitment. When colleges get a rep for doing this, travel teams become aware of this and that school's opportunities to recruit their travel kids become harder. It's sort of an unspoken thing at least in my experience. I know that UVa, when they fired their last coach, made the new coach honor all the verbal commitments the other coach accepted and it has hurt them very badly as you can see from their record. He was not a strong recruiter and had recruited many young kids. In fact, I believe that even next year's class will be comprised of many of his recruits still and we're 3 years out from his firing. Just saying that the verbal commitments are taken very seriously in the softball world.
