It appears that Disney-ABC-ESPN wants to offer a new "stand alone" espn+ streaming channel through ROKU ... in addition to their existing deals with cable companies WatchESPN which we pay for through our current deals with those cable companies.

ESPN profits have suffered recently and they are looking for a new sources of income. By the way the espn+ can only be successful if they can offer programing from the Power 5, which will require them breaking deals, robbing content from their current cable companies for ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, ESPNNews, ... The propose content for espn+ doesn't appear to be that appealing for a general public, i.e. professional sports which are currently locked up, that's why the ACCN, BTN, SECN, ... are only the real source of new income on the cheap. Especially since they got the schools to pay for the $M+ infrastructures and viewers the monthly fees, sweet.
