I am definitely curious to see what impact this has on the number of pooch
kicks. I would think the number would go down because there is no incentive for the kickoff team to try to pin the opposition inside the 20 yard line. If the kickoff team is conceding the starting field position at the 25 yard line, then might as well kick it deep.
Something else that could be interesting to see if the KR is running up to catch the ball (inside the 25) and takes a step before taking a knee to down the ball (like what you typically see now on kickoffs) instead of waving hand over his head (like what you typically see on punts). Will the officials spot the ball at the 25 yd line or wherever his knee hits the ground (since he took 1 step forward while in the act of catching the ball)? I do think early on you will see players take accidentally take a step forward when they meant to fair catch the ball. [Post edited by VTHokie2000 at 04/17/2018 3:16PM]
