Check out a European SIM card if using a lot of data

Google maps, for example, with location turned on ate through the 100MB I had through the Verizon international plan in 2-3 days, then another $25 charge. After 2 of these additional charges in less than 6 days I had enough of running out of data.

I ended up getting a Vodafone SIM with a 1-month agreement with 3.65 GB of data, which worked well for me as I was primarily using maps. The Vodafone tech took care of configuring my phone and it worked normally, although it was different receiving some prompts and alerts in German.

It does change your phone number, however, which can be inconvenient for those doing a lot of texting/calling.

Finished the trip, changed the SIM back to my Verizon original when we hit NY, everything back to normal.
