Lotta good advice below. Couple of thoughts.


I have ATT but I'm guessing verizon is competitive/similar. You can get a 30 day international plan that will reduce the rate to call back home to about $1/minute. There will be data available to use, but not a lot. That plan will probably also have unlimited texting. ATT does. So texting is the way to go. If there is an emergency, they can call. Plan for ATT is pretty expensive though... maybe $45per line? Anyway, verizon probably has the charges on website and how to add the plan.

I would recommend turning international roaming off on the phones. Limit internet to WiFi which is free in a lot of places - don't burn your data and get an overage charge. Somebody below mentioned WhatsApp. That is a great app, works really well, but only over wifi or if you use the data on your plan. It sends/receives pictures, make phone calls really well. I love WhatsApp. Talked to one of my kids today on it - video call - it was great (I live overseas, kids back in the states).

Another idea - see what the rate is to call back to USA from wherever they will be, if they have a local sim card. I live overseas and for you to call me from USA is like $2-3/minute. But for me to call back to USA with my local sim card is like 7 cents a minute. So if their phone is unlocked for international use they could buy a local sim card, purchase airtime to call locally and also purchase international airtime to call back home. Kinda complicated to figure out the best/cheapest way to go.
