Liberty softball observations
I am posting because we edged out a win yesterday and will be returning a game next Tuesday at Liberty. I just completed witnessing a 3 game series at Longwood and wanted to share some observations for the readers.
Liberty has invested big time in their coach, a former USA Olympic coach, and facility. They have a roster of about 20 players that includes ONLY 2 from the state of Virginia. From the stands their team appears to be much larger physically than the Hokies and have above average speed. That size is meant to be a compliment and they are very athletic. They have at least 4 pitchers that I saw throw and all have a variety of pitches.
Their best pitcher is the one who came on in relief yesterday. She is fairly fast but has a great rise ball and curve pitch. That is the reason you saw so many hokies strike out yesterday. BTW watching the telecast via the internet for our home games gives one a great view of the pitched ball approaching the batter. Easy to see the ball curve, rise, etc. It showed how strong a pitching performance Carrie Elerbe threw. IMO she won the game almost by herself.
They have twin sisters from California that play first and second base. One is a right hander and the other a lefty. Both carry big bats and have hit multiple home runs this season. They made solid contact just about every at bat this past weekend. They play with confidence and are a force to deal with.
So from someone who follows this game closely I came away impressed with what Liberty has done with their program. And am saying yesterday was a great win and we will have to step it up if we expect to win next week's game in Lynchburg. We can but the margin for error is very small with this year's team.
