Phil Chenier, hands down. I was a Bullets fanatic - like everybody

else in the neighborhood. We played bball all day and night at the park - aided only by the street lights. We always stopped to listen to the Bullets on the radio, going crazy on their championship run my senior year in high school. (Got front row baseline for the finals, but I digress) The Bullets were EVERYTHING to us back then, and Phil Chenier was my guy - I even knew the codes for his plays. The "1-C" was a simple high pick from Unseld to get him a shot around the top of the key, but it was pretty much unstoppable, and a bread and butter of the O - Chenier was a mid 20's per game guy.

I met him at a bar on M street in Georgetown after he retired. I think he was part of some promotion gig. I had a few ( shocker ) and just HAD to approach him with the small talk, telling him I was a big fan, asked him if he remembered the "1-C"...He threw his head back and crunched his eyes... "You KNOW that play???" (That's right Phil, I said I'm a big fan, and by god, I have the goods). It went pretty well. He seemed genuinely surprised at my adoration - I mean, he is aware he isn't Michael Jordan, but I treated him that way. I've got a napkin with a "Coach McGuirk, don't forget the 1-C play, Phil Chenier" buried somewhere. I still love the guy, and love the fact he got a long term spot announcing Bullets games to stay tight with the team. He's a good one, for sure.
