On Monday, Virginia Tech and Mike Young received a commitment from Ben Hammond, a point guard in the class of 2024.

A 5-foot-11, 165-pound prospect from Fairfax, Va., Hammond previously signed with Rhode Island but reopened his recruitment on April 16. He visited Blacksburg in late April and flipped to the Hokies less than two weeks later.

He was originally pursued by the likes of College of Charleston and George Mason, though bigger names showed interest late in the recruiting process. He had an official visit scheduled to Tennessee that he pushed aside while Providence, Iowa, Butler, Penn State, Georgia Tech and others contacted him after he revisited his options.

“Ben Hammond was the point guard for one of the most powerful high school programs in the country in Paul VI,” Rhode Island coach Archie Miller said when Hammond signed with the Rams in November. “He plays for Glen Farello, who has produced more than 80 Division I players and a handful of guys who have played in the NBA. It’s program that regularly produces high-level, productive players, and Ben has been at the wheel. [He is] a championship-caliber player who is dynamic on both ends of the floor.”

Hammond earned First Team All-Met honors from the Washington Post in March after averaging 14 points, 6.7 assists, 4.5 rebounds and 3.4 steals per game as a senior. He joined the 1,000-point club this year and became PVI’s all-time winningest player after securing his fourth straight VISAA state championship less than a week after winning his second WCAC title.

Hammond also plays for Team Takeover on the Nike grassroots circuit. Former Hokies star Erick Green, a Winchester, Va., native who led the nation in scoring in 2013, won a state title at PVI in 2009 and played for Team Takeover, too.

He’s a consensus three-star recruit and a top-10 player in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The 247Sports composite rankings list him as the 195th overall prospect in the 2024 class.

Hammond’s addition gives the Hokies 11 scholarship players for the 2024-25 season, leaving two open spots. He’s the third point guard, joining Temple transfer Hysier Miller and sophomore Brandon Rechsteiner. He’s also one of seven newcomers, including high school recruits Tyler Johnson and Ryan Jones Jr.

  1. Seems like a good get. He’s a solid player from great program, and it’s smart to have three point guards on the roster in case of injury.

  2. I’m thinking we better get 2 more wings that can both shoot. Now we have too many athlete types that are limited as shooters. Not sure how CMY is going to adjust to this.

  3. I saw PVI play @ O’Connell in early 2023. Game was close the half, then PVI blew it open in the 2nd. They were simply too fast for DJO.

  4. CMY has to try and find an experienced PG..Steiner’s got no real experience and I don’t think he’s tall enough or quick enough to get downhill..With his inexperience comes turnovers,if you think Pedula was lose with the ball our inexperience at PG is going to lose us plenty of ballgames in ACC play..

    1. Hysier Miller says “Hi! I have played PG at Temple at 30+mpg the last 2 seasons.”

    2. Huh??? Did you come up with this all by yourself or read some bozo’s blog on X? Maybe you didn’t know about the Temple transfer.

  5. Possible but not likely IMO. I think they would like more length at 2/3/wing

  6. Maybe he is a fearless quick penetrating point guard that we have been missing for a while.

    1. my hope also. as well as being the ringmaster of the offense.

welcome Mr Howard! good to have you aboard.

  7. Any idea if Rech. wants to try somewhere else, or wants the competition this fall? Personally, I hope he stays and becomes #1 PG next season. Lots of options for lots of players now.

    1. If his dad wants him to stay, he’s staying…unless you want to tell him 🧐😜

      1. LOL! Not for a $2 billion Powerball payout!! I like my appendages attached to my torso, thank you!!

        1. Is it possible for miller to slide over to wing while our other pgs are in the game?

          1. Possible but not likely IMO. I think they would like more length at 2/3/wing
