It’s been an up and down stretch for Virginia Tech baseball, but perhaps they can generate some momentum after holding off No. 1 Florida State 13-12 on Saturday to even the series at one apiece.
The Hokies scored four runs in the sixth inning and two more in the eighth, before allowing Florida State to pull within one in the top of ninth. Aaron McGarity shut the door after that to register his fourth save of the season.
Tom Stoffel led the way for Virginia Tech offensively, going 2-4 and driving in four runs. Mac Caples drove in Sam Fragale in the sixth inning to give Virginia Tech an 11-10 lead, and then Joe Freiday Jr. hit a two-RBI triple in the eighth to add insurance.
Connor Coward was credited with the win after pitching four scoreless innings out of the bullpen, allowing just one hit. Andrew McDonald got the start for Virginia Tech, allowing nine runs on eight hits in just 3.1 innings.
The upset over the ‘Noles moves the Hokies to 2-3 in the ACC and 12-9 on the year overall. Virginia Tech and Florida State will play the final game of their three-game series on Sunday at 1 p.m.
