BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech and the University of Maryland Athletics Departments announced Wednesday that the Hokies and Terrapins have agreed to a four-game football series starting in 2026. That game will renew a series whose origins date back to 1919.
Each school will serve as the host to two games, with Lane Stadium serving as the site for contests in 2027 and 2029, while Maryland will be the home team for games in 2026 and 2028. The initial game of this is slated for College Park, Maryland, on Sept. 19, 2026.
Virginia Tech is already slated to face West Virginia at FedEx Field in Landover, Maryland, on Sept. 2, 2017 and most recently played in the state of Maryland in the 2014 Military Bowl against Cincinnati in Annapolis, Md.
“Virginia Tech fans should be excited about the Hokies returning to the capital region for two more future games,” Director of Athletics Whit Babcock said. “The opportunity to get a four-game series against a Big Ten Conference opponent was certainly appealing. Even more importantly, we were eager to renew a historic series against a regional foe in a market where we have a very strong alumni base. Coach [Justin] Fuente and our staff will continue seeking opportunities to bolster our non-conference schedule in future seasons.”
Maryland holds a slim, one-game advantage in the series, owning 16 victories and 15 losses against the Hokies. Tech has won five of its past six meetings with the Terrapins.
The two teams have not met since Nov. 16, 2013, a game the Terrapins won on the final play of a 27-24 overtime contest at Lane Stadium.
The last time the two teams met in College Park was Nov. 14, 2009, when the Hokies cruised to a 36-9 victory behind three touchdown passes from then-quarterback Tyrod Taylor. Tech has won two straight at Maryland and is 4-3 all time there. The Hokies are 5-5 all time against Maryland in Blacksburg. The teams have played on a neutral site 14 times (Maryland owns an 8-6 edge in those games), including contests played in Roanoke, Norfolk and Washington, D.C.
