Recruiting Notes: Dylan Powell Sets Decision Date

The first wave of official visitors — Clay-Chalkville (AL) athlete Tyrrell Pigrome, Hannibal (MO) offensive lineman Dylan Powell, Camden Catholic (Cherry Hill, N.J.) athlete Tyree Rodgers and Raines (Jacksonville, FL) wide receiver Rick Wells — arrived at Virginia Tech on Wednesday. By all accounts the visits went well; however, all four prospects are now on official visits at other schools.

Pigrome is visiting Maryland. Powell is visiting Stanford. Rodgers is scheduled to visit Rutgers, and Wells is in Gainesville making an official visit to the University of Florida, the school he is currently committed to.

Powell’s father, Darin, called the Virginia Tech visit “awesome” in this tweet. Besides Tech and Stanford, the younger Powell is also considering Iowa State. He announced yesterday that he will reveal his college choice the evening of February 2, which is the eve of National Signing Day.

On Friday, the Hokies welcomed three uncommitted targets on official visits. All three hail from the Sunshine State, and they are Raines (Jacksonville, FL) defensive end JaQuan Bailey, Palatka (FL) linebacker Eron Carter and Venice (FL) defensive tackle Jarrod Hewitt. Also, Tech is hosting three prospects currently committed to other schools, including Dutchtown (Geismar, LA) cornerback Coney Durr (a Minnesota commit), Lafayette (Williamsburg, VA) linebacker Chase Pine (Pittsburg), and Trinity Christian Academy (Jacksonville, FL) linebacker Dominique Ross (UNC).

Some previous Virginia Tech commitments, including linebacker Tavante Beckett, are in Blacksburg as well, but here is a rundown of those prospects in town over the weekend.

JAQUAN BAILEY

It is Iowa State, Tennessee, or Virginia Tech for Bailey, a one-time Florida commit.

ERON CARTER

Carter took an official visit to Western Kentucky last weekend. Assuming he has a spot, things look good for the Hokies.

CONEY DURR

The three finalists for Durr are Minnesota, North Carolina and Virginia Tech. It’s a gut feeling, but I like Tech’s chances here. If he heads elsewhere, I think UNC is the pick.

JARROD HEWITT

It appears to be an Iowa State versus Virginia Tech battle for Hewitt, a 6’2″, 290-pound prospect. Tech may be tough to beat after this weekend, though.

Here are Hewitt’s senior highlights…

CHASE PINE

Pine has had a tough time with his decision. He announced that he was 100-percent to Pitt earlier this month, but Tech coaches Justin Fuente and Bud Foster visited several days later and now he reportedly is in Blacksburg for an official visit. I think Pine picks either Pitt or VT in the end, but I also don’t think any school will feel comfortable here until a signed LOI is in hand.

DOMINIQUE ROSS

Ross attends Isaiah Ford’s alma mater, but I think UNC could be tough to beat out.

  1. Chase Pine can play QB too!
Dom Ross is a natural Backer in our system. Would wreak havoc. Those two are studs. Didn’t look at the others’ film although I had seen Eron’s previously and he could be an LB or a DE.

  2. What are the limits on “free” stuff for recruits? That candy display looks pretty weak.

  3. Wednesday will be a few good surprises for VT . Fuente came to VT Running !! And Hasn’t stopped since he got here, Something we as VT fans hadn’t seen in a Long Time !!
