It was great seeing Cassell full on Sunday. It was like having a sixth man. The crowd can really affect a game.
UNC has big players on the inside, but LeDay doesn’t really think about it. He just sees another human being, and he goes after them.
The Hokies need to get better at preventing offensive rebounds. They have to do a better job of handling long rebounds as well.
LeDay doesn’t really think of himself as the leading scorer. He just goes out there to win games.
Buzz is establishing a great culture that is based around hard work. If they keep doing things Buzz’s way, it will lead to success. The team is very tight.
Ahmed Hill has the best dance moves on the team. LeDay thinks he is the best singer on the team. Greg Donlon eats more than anyone else on the team.
Tech is focusing on cutting down on turnovers and rebounding the ball. The Hokies think they are beating themselves moreso than other teams are beating them.
Williams wishes that moral victories counted, but they don’t. They can’t contract the disease of believing that it’s okay to play teams close. They can’t let people pat them on the back. They keep score at this level, and results matter.
When you find out that the game time has been changed after UNC has already arrived at their hotel in Blacksburg, that’s not right.
Tech turned the ball over too many times against North Carolina. They allowed too many offensive rebounds. The lower their number of turnovers, the more points the Hokies are going to score, the more fouls they’ll draw, and the more free throw attempts they’ll have. Tech has to minimize their turnovers and the opponent’s offensive rebounds.
Buzz wants everyone involved to be rewarded for hard work, because that’s how you build, and that’s how you grow. Unfortunately, they couldn’t take advantage of two opportunities against Notre Dame and UNC.
Buzz is very slow to hire people. It’s not only about someone’s skillset and talent. He needs people around him to help him keep his emotions in check, and he doesn’t want his emotions to compromise his decision making. The people on his staff, from the bottom to the top, are very important to Tech’s program.
Scouting reports are very important. Tech doesn’t have quite as much talent as some of the teams they face, so accurate scouting reports can save a few baskets, or get the Hokies a few baskets. That can be the difference in a game.
Buzz knows he isn’t going to be able to recruit McDonald’s All-Americans. Those guys don’t want to be coached the way he coaches. He recruits guys who are attracted to his culture. If your culture is built on the right things, that culture will recruit the right people.
How the Hokies are playing this year is totally different from how they played last year. The personnel is different, so they had to change some things. Buzz has never coached the way he coached last year, but he didn’t have much of a choice.
Louisville is completely different defensively than UNC. They make it very difficult to inbound the ball. They aren’t quite like West Virginia, but they still make things very hard. They want the offense to be unsure of what they’re going to do. It gets you on your heels, and it gets you to overdribble, which leads to turnovers.
Louisville is probably better this year than they were last year. Williams thinks they are on the same level as North Carolina.
It would help the Hokies to get Ahmed Hill and Chris Clarke back on their roster. They are also trying to figure out Ty Outlaw’s situation. Outlaw was the best prospect they signed with experience.
Khadim Sy is a big kid from Oak Hill. He has a long way to go, but Buzz likes his potential. They are working hard to recruit 2017 and 2018 kids as well.
Buzz tells recruits that choosing a school is a life decision. He tells them that if they come to Tech, they aren’t going to like him every day because he is going to hold them accountable in every part of their life.
