Clarke Sidelined With Fifth Metatarsal Fracture

BLACKSBURG, Va. – Virginia Tech forward Chris Clarke suffered a right foot injury over Christmas break and will have surgery later this week.

Clarke, a freshman from Virginia Beach, Virginia, sustained a fracture to the fifth metatarsal of his right foot while working out on Wednesday over Christmas break.  His foot was placed in a walking boot and Clarke was examined by team orthopedic surgeon Dr. Tony McPherron in Blacksburg on Sunday.

Following x-rays and the examination, it was determined that surgery was the best course of action. The surgery will be performed by Dr. McPherron on Tuesday, Dec. 29 at LewisGale Montgomery Hospital in Blacksburg. Until the surgery is completed, it will be impossible to know if or when Clarke will be able to return to action this season.

“I feel terrible for Chris. He has strived very hard to get where he is,” head coach Buzz Williams said. “He is an outstanding player who is a better person. I know that with the values instilled by his parents, he will work hard to come back strong from this unfortunate situation.

Clarke has played in 11 of the Hokies’ 12 games this season, starting 10 times. He is averaging 10.5 points and 7.4 rebounds per game and is tied for the team lead with 12 steals.

  1. This many foot injuries is indicative of a court issue, a shoe issue, or a training issue… I for one am looking forward to the new S&C staff.

  2. Get well soon Chris…ur gonna be a really good player for us down the line, meantime, next man up on the depth chart #Time2Shine

  3. If it wasn’t for bad luck we would have no luck at all! Feel really bad for Chris. Some where along the line we have to get a break from all these injuries. Sickening.

    1. Starting? This is the third kid who was expected to get significant minutes this year that we’ve now lost. Add Clarke to Ahmed Hill and Ty Outlaw.

The way we lose guys to injuries and illness absolutely defies belief. I’ll bet that there isn’t another program in the country that has lost as many guys over the past 10 years as we have.

  4. It is really unbelievable!! EVERY year we sustain a year ending injury to a key player!! Are we cursed? Is it the Curry curse? Did Greenburg wrong the basketball Gods when he declined to give Steph a scholarship right out of high school?
