Virginia Tech Offers Tampa Catholic RB/S Devan Barrett

Through Twitter, Tampa (FL) Tampa Catholic running back/safety Devan Barrett announced that he has received a scholarship offer from Virginia Tech. The 6’1″, 190-pound junior was previously offered by Central Florida, Cincinnati, Duke, Florida, Florida Atlantic, Florida International, Miami, NC State and South Florida, among others.

Barrett, whose father, Reggie, played college football at UTEP and then in the NFL, rushed for 441 yards and eight touchdowns as a sophomore last season. He had 38 tackles and five pass breakups as well. A prospect with potential on both sides of the ball, the younger Barrett told the Tampa Tribune in this report that he prefers to play defense but has received scholarship offers as a running back.

A highly regarded recruit, Barrett is rated a 4-star prospect by Rivals and Scout. 247Sports and ESPN rank him as a 3-star prospect.

Virginia Tech last landed a Tampa recruit in the class of 2015, when quarterback Dwayne Lawson signed with the Hokies. Lawson is a true freshman and currently third on the depth chart along with red-shirt freshman Chris Durkin.

  1. I wonder if recruiting in Florida (and Tampa in particular) is going to pick up with our new recruiting hire. People assumed it was because of Lawson but perhaps CFB also wants someone with first hand experience (and contacts) in Florida.

  2. I figure him calling us the University of Virginia Tech shows that we’re probably not on the top of the list just yet.
