Virginia Tech Men’s Basketball Recruiting Notes

The stock of DeMatha Catholic (Hyattsville, MD) class of 2016 combo guard Markelle Fultz was high before the first July Evaluation Period, which took place July 8-12. The 6’4.5″ prospect has played at another level the past few weeks, and as a result he has added two more high profile offers.

Arizona, Kansas, Louisville, Maryland, Virginia and Virginia Tech are among the schools that offered Fultz before July. Within the past week, Kentucky and North Carolina came through as well.

Fultz visited Virginia Tech in mid-June, in the days before the NBPA Top 100 Camp. Coach Buzz Williams has been front and center watching the talented backcourt prospect this week at the Under Armour Association Finals.

As things stand now, assuming junior college transfer Ty Outlaw is indeed a member of the Tech men’s basketball program, the Hokies have one scholarship available for the class of 2016. Here is the breakdown…

2016 Season Roster (Scholarship Players Only)

Seniors: Seth Allen (G), Johnny Hamilton (C), Zach LeDay (F), Ty Outlaw (G), Devin Wilson (G)
Juniors: Justin Bibbs (G), Ahmed Hill (G), Jalen Hudson (G), Satchel Pierce (F)
Sophomores: Kerry Blackshear (F), Chris Clarke (G/F), Justin Robinson (G)

Fultz is absolutely high on the wish list, but the Kentucky offer could be tough to overcome. He plans to narrow his list soon. Tech has also offered and is a serious contender for St. Anne’s-Belfield (Charlottesville, VA) class of 2016 star Javin Montgomery-DeLaurier. Louisville, North Carolina, Texas and Vanderbilt are among the many other schools that have offered the 4-star forward.

Tech extended a new class of 2016 offer earlier this week, coming through for 6’4″ shooting guard Andrew Jones of MacArthur High School in Irving, Texas. Jones had an excellent week at Peach Jam last week, earning offers from Arizona, Texas, TCU, Virginia and Virginia Tech as a result. Baylor, Kansas State and SMU had offered previously.

  1. Will Buzz continue to recruit over his current roster or sign 1 this year? What is his recruiting style from the past?
I know what he has done with our roster, looking for what he did before he got here.

  2. I certainly hope Ty is a member of our basketball team this coming year. I received a note from him today on VT Athletics Department stationary thanking me for being a member of the Hokie Club and a basketball season ticket holder.
