Virginia Tech’s 19 ACC Championships

Today marks the 11-year anniversary of Virginia Tech’s entrance into the ACC on July 1, 2004. It has been a decade-plus of ups and downs, but one thing most of us can probably agree on is that we didn’t see the Hokies winning 19 ACC Championships in their first decade-plus.

OXVT put together a great infographic of Virginia Tech’s 19 ACC Championships, more than Bill Brill ever thought the Hokies would achieve.

The championships have come in a variety of sports (six, if you lump track and field and cross country together as a single “sport”), with only four of 19 championships coming from VT’s signature sport, football. As a matter of fact, VT has added eight non-football championships since Tyrod Taylor led the Hokies to the ACC title in 2010.

Dave Cianelli, Virginia Tech’s Director of Track & Field and Cross Country since 2001, has assembled a great program that has contributed nearly half of Virginia Tech’s ACC Championships, registering nine since 2007, and VT’s only championship in 2014-15 (men’s indoor track and field; the Hokies bested all 14 other ACC schools for the crown).

Likewise, Kevin Dresser has assembled a wresting program that is consistently one of the best in the ACC.

There have only been two academic years in which the Hokies didn’t win at least one ACC Championship. On a per-year basis, here’s how it breaks down:

  • 2004-05: 1 (football)
  • 2005-06: 0
  • 2006-07: 4 (women’s indoor and outdoor T&F, softball, golf)
  • 2007-08: 4 (football, women’s indoor and outdoor T&F, softball)
  • 2008-09: 1 (football)
  • 2009-10: 0
  • 2010-11: 2 (football, men’s indoor T&F)
  • 2011-12: 1 (men’s outdoor T&F)
  • 2012-13: 3 (men’s cross country, men’s indoor T&F, wrestling)
  • 2013-14: 2 (wrestling, men’s swimming and diving)
  • 2014-15: 1 (men’s indoor T&F)

Some great players and athletes have led Tech to ACC Championships. You already know about the football players. Outside of football, Queen Harrison was a key member of the 2007 and 2008 women’s track and field teams that won four ACC titles, and Angela Tincher was the dominant pitcher who led VT to two softball titles. Please feel free to fill in the names of more key Hokie greats in the comments section below.

Also feel free to add corrections and clarifications in the comments section below, as finding information for some of the things discussed here, even in the age of Google, can be difficult.

Thanks to OXVT for the infographic!

  1. Missing the dual meet wrestling chamionship from this year…should read as 3

  2. It would be interesting to see how we stack up against the rest of the ACC teams over that time.

  3. I’m guessing we did not win the ACC soccer championship the year we went to the final four?
